Cops own up 2 years after slapping false case

Chandigarh, July 20 It is justice delayed though not denied for Navdeep Gupta, falsely implicated in a criminal case by his wife.

For the last two years, this Sector 37 resident has been trying to
clear his name in a case registered at a time when he was in judicial
custody in Burail's Model Jail.

The city police also submitted a chargesheet in court, based on the
FIR registered against Navdeep Gupta. Gupta used the Right to
Information Act and procured documents to finally prove his innocence.
The UT Senior Superintendent of Police SS Shrivastava, on Friday, sent
a written warning against the policeman who had registered the false
case against Gupta. On the instructions of a senior IAS officer, who
conducted the inquiry, the police have been asked to initiate
proceedings of perjury against Navdeep Gupta's wife, Virpal Kaur, for
filing charges of criminal intimidation when her husband was already
in jail.

Navdeep, who runs a medical transcriptions business, had a dispute
with his wife Virpal Kaur in 2006. Virpal lodged a criminal complaint
against Navdeep and the police arrested him. He was produced in court
on March 12, 2006, and remanded to judicial custody. On March 17,
2006, Navdeep got bail and was released from Burail jail. The moment
he stepped out of the jail, he learnt he had already been booked in
another case of criminal intimidation.

"I got the shock of my life. When I was in jail, my wife had slapped
another case against me. She alleged I threatened her in the
marketplace on March 15 and abused her in public. Even the city
police, who had arrested me and lodged me in jail three days ago,
conspired with her and lodged another criminal case against me. For
over two years I have been repeatedly writing to various senior police
officials," Gupta said.
